Going hunting today

The wife and I are going on the hunt today for a couple of semi-auto handguns. I've narrowed it down to a few as follows, all 9mm. May look at .040 though. We want them for personnel defense and CC ability, that's why we're not looking at full size.

Bersa, Thunder 9UC
S&W, SW9VE
S&W, M&P9C
Ruger, P95
Ruger, SR9
EAA, Witness compact
Beretta, PX4-SC
Sig Sauer, P250 compact
Springfield, XG(M) sub-compact

These are the front runners.

Wish us luck.
We won't be buying today so if anyone has any experience with the above guns please reply with your input.

Springfield, XG(M) sub-compact

There's a Springfield XD sub-compact, and a Springfield XD(m) full size, but they don't have a compact version of it. I'm not aware of any pistol called the XG.

As for the regular Springfield XD, it's a great gun. I've got the tactical (5" barrel) 9mm, and I've put close to 2000 rounds through it with no problems. The sub-compact version should make a decent carry gun if you don't mind the thickness.

If you're looking at the Springfield XDs, is there a reason you don't have Glock on your list?

The Beretta PX4 is a very nice gun. I've rented it a few times at the local range, very nice to shoot and accurate. Never had any problems with it, but it just seemed to be very thick and bulky for a carry gun.

I can't comment on any of the others since I haven't shot them, but I ended up going with a Taurus PT-709 Slim for my 9mm, but I like my Ruger LCP even more for carry.

Is there a reason why Glock 19 is not already on your list?

The wife preferred the nickel finished Thunder 380. She said, "It feels right". I on the other hand thought the Thunder 9 was right, weight, size & easy to conceal. As far as the Glock is concerned, my nephew has had a few and I don't like how they feel in the hand. After all, it wouldn't be good to have a gun that you weren't comfortable with. I just wish the Thunder 9 came with a nickel finish.

are you going to buy one for her and one for yourself / try to standardize on a platform? I'm trying to do the same (but in reality just trying to rationalize buying more guns :p ) we first bought a fullsize M&P-9 - she liked the handling best vs. SR9, P99, etc. Since then in trying to replace her millennium pro (with a much better firearm) I've purchased an EMP and a Ultra Raptor so covering the bases in both steel and polymer, full and compact, .9mm and .45. I love my XDm so now that the 3.8 is out that's on the buy list "for her" too. :D discounted a .380 mostly to avoid buying another caliber. now what the heck do I do with this old J-frame. heh

I told her that I wanted 2 of the same caliber but, she pointed out that the 380 was the same as a 9mm. I said right, but the 380 (9x17) can't handle the same grain capability of a 9mm(9x19). She said, but I like how it fits and feels in my hand. Who am I to argue, maybe someday the fact that it fits and feels right for her hand may save my life. Haven't bought them yet so I still have a little time to change her mind. Right, I have about as much a chance to do that as the U.S. has to balance it's budget by 2010.
goldwish, good luck. Sounds like you have an ammo dump at your house. :4_1_72:

My wife loves the Bersa 380 as well. I tried to get her to buy something else, but after taking her to a range that rents a bunch of different models, the Bersa Thunder 380 was the only gun she wanted!

She has had it for a while now - and it is very, very reliable (I cannot remember a single FTF). I actually enjoy shooting it from time to time myself. The only pain, currently, is trying to find fairly priced 380 ammo. I have to mail order it, because I haven't seen any locally for a long time.

I also have a Springfield XD 9mm Subcompact, and it is a very nice little gun. It is accurate and relatively easy to conceal. That being said, I usually carry a 1911, because it is what I normally practice with.
